Guide

How do you test coins with a strong neodymium magnet?

What the magnet test proves (and what it cannot), a safe 10-second protocol, and rim-risk with powerful magnets.

The magnet test is a blunt triage on face-to-face buys: silver is not ferromagnetic. If a “silver” piece slaps to a strong neodymium magnet, think plated steel. It does not prove everything—yet nukes a huge chunk of junk.

Powerful neodymium delivers unambiguous pull vs fridge magnets. Handle carefully—pinch risk; never drag the edge; lift with edge protection.

What the magnet test does NOT do

  • Does not replace XRF/density for exotic alloys.
  • Does not grade purity if the core stays non-magnetic.
  • No excuse abuse—slapping can ding soft coins.

Safe 10-second protocol

Slide magnet sideways; if it leaps, stop and log. Photo + short video help disputes.
